Implantology

Implantology is the area of Dentistry that allows fixed or removable oral rehabilitation, of one or more teeth, when there are no remaining teeth.

Implantology is the speciality that is used in the event of tooth loss. Missing teeth may be caused by diseases, such as periodontitis or tooth decay, by accidents or in the case of teeth that have not developed.

Technology today has made implantology a highly developed area of dentistry achieving teeth that are very close to natural ones in physiological and aesthetic terms.

In Poço Novo’s dental clinic we have specialised dentists who can perform surgery and dental implants.

Dental implant

A dental implant works like an artificial root. It is made of titanium, a highly biocompatible material, which when placed in the bone supports the ceramic crowns, and looks very similar to a natural tooth.

As a rule, implants are inserted in the bone in an intervention with local anaesthesia. The healing time is 3 to 4 months, depending on the situation, as each case is different. The crown, bridge or prosthesis is then attached to the implant.

Rehabilitation on implants can be carried out in three ways depending on the case and the number of missing teeth: in the form of a single implant, a bridge on implants or a total prosthesis on implants.

Advantages of dental implants

  • Implants are aesthetically very similar to natural teeth and are not easily noticed by third parties;
  • They prevent wear of adjacent teeth;
  • They may help to reduce the loss of bone tissue.

Stages of the implant process

  • Assessment, information and counselling;
  • Planning of surgery/rehabilitation: examinations and definition of the position of the implant;
  • Intervention: placement of the implant with local anaesthesia. The bone will integrate the implant;
  • Healing;
  • Rehabilitation of the implant: the new crown is set on the implant.
